Applications invited to fill the post of the next President of the European Research Council

An independent search committee, appointed by the European Research, Science and Innovation Commissioner Carlos Moedas2, is inviting applications for the prestigious post of the President of the European Research Council (ERC3). The committee is chaired by Mario Monti4, President of Bocconi University and former Prime Minister of Italy. It will conduct the search process up to a shortlist of potential candidates to be submitted to the European Commission.

The ERC President should be an internationally renowned and respected scientist. She/he will chair the ERC Scientific Council and will be the voice and public face of the ERC. She/he is expected to be a prominent advocate of frontier research and an ambassador of European science within and beyond Europe, with the aim of strengthening further the ERC's performance and prestige and Europe's science base in frontier research.

The new President of the ERC is due to take office from 1 January 2020. The term of office is limited to four years, renewable once. No age limit applies. Applicants must be nationals of an EU Member State. The deadline for applications is 1 October 2018.

    De Portugees Carlos Moedas (1970) was van 1 november 2014 tot 1 december 2019 lid van de Europese Commissie. In de Commissie-Juncker was hij belast met onderzoek, wetenschap en innovatie. Hij is lid van de christendemocratische partij PSD. Moedas was lid van het parlement en werd in 2011 medewerker (staatsssecretaris) van minister-president Passo Coelho. Als econoom was hij nauw betrokken bij de economische hervormingen in Portugal.

    Dit agentschap werd in 2007 opgericht en wordt sinds 15 juli 2009 autonoom bestuurd. Waar de wetenschappelijke raad van de Europese Onderzoeksraad de wetenschappelijke strategie en methodologieën vastlegt, is het agentschap ERCEA verantwoordelijk voor de uitvoering.

    Mario Monti (1943) was van 16 november 2011 tot 28 april 2013 minister-president van Italië. Hij leidde een kabinet van technocraten en was tevens minister van Financiën en Economische Zaken. Monti was van 1995 tot 2004 lid van de Europese Commissie. Van 1995 tot 1999 was hij belast met interne markt, en van 1999 tot 2004 met mededinging. Eerder was hij hoogleraar economie aan de universiteiten van Turijn en Milaan en werkzaam in diversie Italiaanse overheidscommissies inzake economische vraagstukken. Als EU-commissaris kreeg hij bekendheid door zijn strijd met Microsoft over schending van de mededingingsregels. Hij is president van de Bocconi-universiteit in Milaan.
