New EU Justice Commissioner: Martine Reicherts2 takes up office in the European Commission

Following the election of Viviane Reding3 to the European Parliament, I have been called upon by the Luxembourgish government to serve as EU Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, in the College of the European Commission. The European Parliament has elected me on 16 July 2014, following an exchange of views with the LIBE, JURI and FEMM committees in Strasbourg on 14 July.

It is an honour to be the Luxembourger who will succeed Viviane Reding and precede Jean-Claude Juncker4, President-elect of the European Commission. I am firmly committed to working with diligence, transparency and collegiality to safeguard the European fundamental values and the rights of EU citizens.

During the past 5 years, the area of EU justice policy has made great strides to the construction of a true European area of Justice at the service of citizens and businesses. The Charter of Fundamental Rights has been applied across all areas of EU activity, and proposals to safeguard the rights of citizens in criminal proceedings, the protection of personal data and gender equality in public companies have underlined the EU's commitment to its citizens. At the same time, the Commission has put forward a number of initiatives in the civil and commercial area to help businesses across the European Union take full advantage of our Single Market.

Much has been achieved, but more needs to be done. We need to keep working to ensure that what we do in the field of justice brings even more tangible benefits to European citizens and businesses. They need to feel confident that their rights will be upheld wherever they are in the EU.

Our fundamental rights and values are precious. And they are not a given - they need to be protected and defended, every day. I stand ready to put all my energy into this task. I will do so in the closest possible cooperation with the European Parliament and the Member States.

    Martine Reicherts (1957) was in 2014 interim-commissaris namens Luxemburg voor Justitie, grondrechten en burgerschap. Zij was directeur-geneaal van het directoraat officiële publicaties van de EU en daarvoor topambtenaar voor bestuurszaken en personeelsbeleid van de EU, woordvoerder van de Europese Commissie en plaatsvervangend hoofd van het kabinet van commissievoorzitter Santer. Zij is tevens yogalerares.

    De Luxemburgse Viviane Reding (1951) was van 1 juli 2014 tot 1 september 2018 lid van het Europees Parlement voor de christendemocraten. Mevrouw Reding was van van 1999 tot 2014 lid van de Europese Commissie. In de Commissie-Barroso II was zij vicevoorzitter en eurocommissaris voor justitie en burgerrechten. In de Commissie-Prodi (1999-2004) was zij commissaris voor onderwijs, cultuur, jeugdzaken, media en sport. In de Commissie-Barroso I (2004-2010) was zij belast met informatiemaatschappij en media. Mevrouw Reding was eerder al eens lid van het Europees Parlement (1989-1999), en ze was lid van de Luxemburgse volksvertegenwoordiging (1979-1989).

    Jean-Claude Juncker (1954) was van 1 november 2014 tot 1 december 2019 voorzitter van de Europese Commissie. Hij werd op 15 juli 2014 gekozen. Juncker was in 1995-2013 minister-president van Luxemburg. Eerder was hij staatssecretaris en minister onder meer van financiën. Hij bekleedde daarnaast functies bij de Wereldbank en het IMF. In 2005-2013 was hij voorzitter van de eurogroep. Juncker is lid van de Christelijke Volkspartij en leidde een coalitie van christendemocraten en sociaaldemocraten. Hij is diverse malen onderscheiden met internationale prijzen, zoals de Walter Hallsteinprijs en de Karelsprijs.
