Infographic: how the European Parliament president gets elected - Main contents
As the European Parliament steps into the second half of the 2019-2024 term, MEPs will elect a new president. Find out about the procedure in our infographic.
On 18 January 2022, MEPs elected Roberta Metsola as the next president of the European Parliament. Before that, on 17 January, they paid tribute to David Sassoli, the previous president who passed away on 11 January.
Candidates for the post should be put forward by either a political group or a group of at least 36 MEPs. There could be up to four rounds of voting, the last one being between the two candidates who have received the most votes in the penultimate, third round. To win, a candidate needs a majority of the valid votes cast.
The president’s term of office is for two-and-half years. Members can be elected to the post more than once.
