At the conference on the European qualifications framework taking place today and tomorrow in Budapest, Federal Minister Gehrer stressed the importance of education for a successful European Union and pointed out that Chancellor Schüssel had given an assurance that education would have an important place in the conclusions of the upcoming European Council in Brussels. "This is yet another indicator of the importance of education for Europe", Gehrer said.
Work in this area must continue. "The European qualifications framework is our common currency in the education sector". This system will make diplomas and qualifications more comparable. This in turn will make it easier for individual citizens to find out what their qualifications are worth in another Member State.
The European qualifications framework simplifies and facilitates the mutual recognition of diplomas. This promotes mobility and transparency between the different education systems of the Member States.
"Quality is the objective and the motto of our Presidency. Common objectives and comparable education systems are important for Europe and its citizens and we are continuing to work systematically towards this end." At the same time, the minister also stressed that education policy was a national responsibility and would remain so in keeping with the subsidiarity principle.
