Statement ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP on the Election of Donald Trump as President of the United States of America

Taking note of the election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States of America, ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP, said: “ALDE has always supported the US Democrats and their candidates such as Hillary Clinton because they belong to our international political family.

I wish Hillary Clinton and the US Democrats the necessary strength to overcome this defeat.”

“We need a strong Democratic Party to safeguard civil liberties, international trade, global security and an open economy. We hope that Democrats, moderate Republicans and Independents in both Houses of the US Congress will engage in productive cooperation in favour of a strong USA which is open to the World.”

“President Trump will face the challenges and opportunities of a globalising world, the need for international trade and cooperation with Europe inside and outside NATO. Once the Trump Administration is installed in January, we as the European Union and our Member States must work closely with the USA and its government to ensure the values and principles we hold dear are maintained for the mutual benefit of all our citizens.”
