The UK Liberal Democrats gathered in Brighton this weekend for their Autumn Congress, promising to be the only political party fighting to keep Britain open, tolerant and united.

Less than three months after the referendum vote of 23 June, Brexit (and what it means) was on the top of the agenda with delegates, among adopting other policy motions, giving a vote of approval to their party’s new Plan for Britain in Europe with the Liberal Democrats believing the British people should have their say on the final Brexit deal in a referendum.

In a move, praised by Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron, as a "great act of solidarity and friendship", the ALDE Party Bureau was present at the Conference and held its latest Bureau meeting in its fringes. Farron joined Bureau members for an exchange of views and also delivered a speech at the international reception organised in cooperation with the Liberal Democrat International Office.

The ALDE Party Bureau also adopted a statement on Brexit in which they state they: “full heartedly support the efforts of the Liberal Democrats under the leadership of Tim Farron to keep the United Kingdom in the EU, and ultimately giving the British people the chance to decide on the deal”.

ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP as well as Vice Presidents Ros Scott and Timmy Dooley participated in fringe meetings organised during the Conference, presenting their insights on the current state of the UK’s relationship to the EU and the next steps following the referendum vote of 23 June. Members of ALDE Party member parties Centerpartiet, Ciudadanos and VVD also participated and the leader of the Liberal Party of Gibraltar, Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia, spoke during the plenary debate on the Europe motion.
