Ria Oomen-Ruijten, European Parliament rapporteur for Turkey, offers her deepest sympathies to the Turkish people, and in particular to those people close to the victims of today's tragic earthquake.

Ria Oomen-Ruijten: "For the second time in one week, the Turkish people have been struck by a terrible tragedy. I offer my sincere condolences to the friends and families of the victims, and my thoughts are with those victims currently fighting for their lives in several hospitals in the region."

The Turkey-rapporteur for the European Parliament, returning from Turkey today after a fact finding mission in Ankara and Istanbul, expects the European Union to assist and support the Turkish authorities in every possible way to cope with this tragedy.
